The Six Personality Profiles (And What They Mean for Your Body)
Despite the lack of modern peer-reviewed data, older observational studies proposed six main personality profiles based on sleep postures. Here is what they claimed—and what you actually need to know for your physical health.
1. The Fetal Position

- The Posture: Curled up on one side with knees drawn toward the chest.
- The Supposed Personality: Tough on the outside, but anxious and sensitive on the inside.
- The Reality: This is the most common adult sleeping position. It is great for reducing acid reflux and snoring, but it requires good pressure relief. If you wake up with aching hips or shoulders, it might be time to buy a memory foam mattress online designed specifically to contour and cushion your joints.
2. The Log & The Yearner

- The Posture: Sleeping on your side with arms either straight down (Log) or reaching forward (Yearner).
- The Supposed Personality: “Logs” are viewed as sociable and trusting, while “Yearners” are considered open-minded but slightly cynical.
- The Reality: Like the fetal position, these are excellent for spinal alignment, provided your pillow has enough loft to keep your neck perfectly straight.
3. The Soldier & The Starfish

- The Posture: Sleeping flat on your back with arms pinned to your sides (Soldier) or framing your head (Starfish).
- The Supposed Personality: “Soldiers” are allegedly quiet and reserved with high standards, while “Starfish” sleepers are incredibly loyal friends and great listeners.
- The Reality: Back sleeping is fantastic for preventing facial wrinkles and keeping the spine in a neutral position. However, gravity can cause the tissues in your throat to collapse into the airway. If back sleeping causes you to snore heavily or gasp for air, it is highly recommended to consult a doctor about sleep apnea treatment options or get fitted for a CPAP machine.
4. The Freefaller

- The Posture: Sleeping flat on your stomach with your head turned to one side and hands tucked under the pillow.
- The Supposed Personality: Social, brash, and outwardly confident, but secretly highly sensitive to criticism.
- The Reality: This is widely considered the worst position for your physical health. It forces your neck into a sharp, unnatural rotation and causes your lower back to sway downward. Chronic stomach sleepers often find themselves needing a chiropractic adjustment for back pain to undo the nightly strain.
5. Starfish
When sleeping like a starfish, you lie on your back with arms up near the pillow and legs outstretched. Idzikowski says starfish sleepers value friendship, and that while they prefer not to be the center of attention, people who sleep in this position are good listeners and quick to help others.
The back sleeping positions are the second most popular positions, after side sleeping. One study found that, on average, over one-third of sleeping time is spent on the back. Based on his 1970s research, sleep researcher Dunkell claimed that people who sleep on their backs are more self-confident. Dunkell also said back sleepers are likely to be more open and sensation-seeking than other sleepers.
