1. What Is the “Beijing Bikini”?

The “Beijing Bikini” refers to a practice where mostly middle-aged and older men roll up their T-shirts to expose their stomachs. It’s a way to beat the heat and has been seen on the streets of cities like Beijing, Tianjin, and Shandong for decades.
Zhang Zhiheng, Lived in Beijing, China, said : ” It was much more popular in northern China 10-20 years ago. As a southerner when I firstly saw this in Beijing around 1990, I also felt disgusting. People then were not well-educated and had bad behaviors in public. But things are getting much better in these years, as the young generations grow up and become the mainstream. China is progressing all the time, it’s sad someone from outside is still so blind to see the significant improvement there but stick to the dark side of the society.”
Recently, a social media user took to X to share a screenshot of the popular Chinese ‘Beijing Bikini’ trend writing, ‘It’s almost that time again’ Their post has received 3.4M views with 167 comments.

2. ‘Beijing Bikinis’ everywhere

The “Beijing bikini” refers to a style of dress commonly seen in China, particularly among men, where they roll up their shirts to expose their midriffs, especially in hot weather. This trend has gained popularity for several reasons.
I made one of my most titillating discoveries early.
It was the spectacle of leathery old guys, mostly out for walks, seated in shop fronts or lazing in the shade pools of serene parks – all with their T-shirts jacked up to their rib cages.
The Beijing Bikini essentially involves using your gut as a ledge for your T-shirt. You also need to roll up your T-shirt at the back to better secure it above your midriff – fashioning it a bit like a sports bra. Tap Next To Learn More…
